Swinford car theft ‘mysterious’

Edwin McGreal

Gardaí are continuing to investigate the theft of a car in the Swinford area two days before Christmas which was later found burned out near Charlestown five days later.
The car, an 1997 gray Toyota Corolla, was taken from outside a house at Culmore, Swinford sometime around 10pm on Friday, December 23.
Gardaí in Swinford say they investigated a number of angles including that the car was stolen for use in other criminal activity but they said that no other incidents corresponded to this one.
They are also investigating the possibility that the car was stolen by joyriders. The car was found burned out at Trout Hill, Charlestown on December 28. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Swinford Garda Station on 094 9251115.
Meanwhile Gardaí in Ballina are appealing for witnesses to a break-in at Longnecks Bar and Restaurant on Tuesday morning last, January 3. The thieves gained access through a roof section and emptied the cigarette machine and also took a quantity of cash from a cash register. Attempts to break into the safe were unsuccessful. Anyone with any information is asked to contact Ballina Garda Station on 096 20560. Levels of crime throughout Mayo over the Christmas period were ‘moderate’, but gardaí have renewed their advice to householders and property owners to be vigilant at all times.
