A leaked internal document last week indicated that the Castlebar Aviva branch, one of 26 branches due to close nationwide, will close in June 2012. The move would result in the loss of five jobs at the outlet.
The closure would form part of Aviva’s restructuring of its European regional operations, plans for which were announced last month.
UNITE trade union regional officer Brian Gallagher said he would be very disappointed by a decision to close the Castlebar office.
Gallagher said it was ‘unacceptable’ that these details should emerge now, as Aviva had previously insisted that it would be 2012 before specifics of the job losses and restructuring plans were agreed.
Last month, Aviva announced its plans to shed 950 jobs from its Irish division and from its European business, which is based in Ireland.
At the time, Gallagher was critical of the company’s communication with its staff, branding it ‘appalling’.
