Msgr Horan monument to be erected on airport approach road

PLANS to erect a larger than life-size monument of Msgr James Horan on the approach road to Knock Airport have been announced by a local committee. It is hoped to have the monument in place by May 5, 2012, the 101st anniversary of the birth of Fr Msgr Horan.
The initiative is being spearheaded by Noel Jennings from Knock. The other members of the Committee are Tomás Grimes, Monsignor’s grandnephew, Paddy Mahon, Director of Services Mayo Co Council, Cllr Joe Mellett, Swinford and Gaynor Seville, Public Art Coordinator of Mayo County Council.
“It is only right and proper that Msgr Fr Horan should take centre-stage here. He was an amazing man and the extraordinary vision and commitment he displayed throughout his life is known far and wide and has been documented in film, song and verse.
“We believe passionately in having a memorial that will document the Monsignor’s life and all he has contributed to the region in both facilities and employment. The public procurement advertising tenders for the project are being published this week. In order to raise the finance, grants are being applied for. As there will be a need to raise some funds locally, a bank account has been set up in the Bank of Ireland in Swinford,” says Noel Jennings.
The public are invited to contribute either directly to the above account or alternatively to send to either Noel Jennings at the Airport or Joe Mellett, Swinford.
“The monument will be a fitting reminder to all people coming and going from the airport of the reason it is there in the first place. We are greatly encouraged by the goodwill there is out there for this project. We believe it will be a truly fitting monument to a great Mayo man and a great Irishman,” adds Noel.
