“APPRECIATING Mayo’s Hidden Treasures: Family Carers” is how the Carers’ Association and Mayo Volunteer Centre plan to honour all those generous people on a dedicated day on Monday next, December 5 at Breaffy House Hotel.
Coincidentally the special day coincides with the International Day of the Volunteer. CSO (Central Statistics Office) figures reveal that County Mayo has the highest number of carers – 5,440 – per capita in the country. These carers often carry out their work in isolated rural areas.
The dedicated day, to which both carers and the cared for are welcome, will provide a variety of stalls and services including expert information, health checks, nutritional and fitness advice. Representatives from support groups and training agencies, such as the VEC, Fás, the National Learning Network will also attend.
Therapists will also be available to offer a range of pampering treatments while experts will advise on respite availability through Western Allzheimer’s Association, Western Care, the Mayo-Roscommon Hospice and the Alzheimer’s Association of Ireland.
