Belmullet lotto winners collect €11m cheque

Everyone who plays the Lotto dreams of what they would do with their newfound wealth if their numbers came up, but the McIntyres in Belmullet are happy to ‘sit tight’ and think things over.
The McIntyre family from Ballyglass, outside Belmullet, travelled to the National Lottery Headquarters in Dublin last Friday to collect their cheque for €11,033,953, which they are splitting six ways.
Evelyn, who bought the lucky €4 quick-pick in Brogan’s Eurospar, travelled to Dublin on Friday to collect the cheque with her husband, Martin, and children, Michelle (29), Stephanie (27), Sandra (26) and Shane (18), along with a number of family and friends from Erris.
The revealed how they felt about the win over some celebratory glasses of champagne. “We’re absolutely delighted. We simply cannot believe that we are all sitting here with a cheque for over €11 million in front of us. It’s just unbelievable,” said Evelyn.

Chance purchase
Mayo’s latest millionaires realised they had scooped the bumper rollover jackpot when Evelyn checked her ticket after watching Winning Streak. Evelyn only went into Brogan’s Eurospar to buy phone credit for one of her daughters and had forgotten about her ticket until the magic numbers appeared on the screen.
“I checked the ticket on Saturday evening after watching Winning Streak. I glanced at the ticket and realised I had a few numbers so I passed it to my husband who then told me I had six numbers. At that point I thought I had won a couple of thousand euros,” laughed Evelyn.
“When we realised we had won the €11 million jackpot we were in shock,” added Martin. “It just doesn’t feel real. It will definitely take a while to sink in.”
The family decided to split the money six ways and each will get a staggering €1.8 million. Despite all the money in the bank, they said they were in no rush to spend it. They are planning ‘to sit tight, have the money put away somewhere for the future, and think about things over the next couple of months’.

Popular family
The McIntyre’s are a small farming family from the quiet seaside village of Ballyglass but only Martin and Evelyn and son Shane, who completed his Leaving Cert this year, live at home. The win caused huge celebrations across Belmullet when people realised the winning ticket was won in town with the family described as ‘one of the nicest you could ever meet’.
The McIntyres’ win ranks 11th in the list of largest Lotto jackpot wins since the Lotto game began in 1987, and the largest Lotto win ever sold in Mayo.
