Celebrating mothers everywhere

Maggie Gibbons

It seems we’re only over Valentine’s Day and Mothers’ Day is upon us. Whether you love or loathe it, you will be bombarded with advertising hype reminding you to buy flowers or dine somewhere special in her honour. Is our imagination so lacking that card companies can so easily persuade us to part with our money? Having said that, it does provide the perfect excuse to shower your mother with some extra attention.
Social Network sites will be festooned with messages of love, leading me to wonder why it’s necessary to broadcast in such a public manner. It’s all too easy nowadays to air everything on Facebook, Twitter or your preferred choice of social network. Maybe a bit of time spent chatting face to face or a simple phone call would actually mean more?
I don’t think you need a particular day to show love. The relationship you share with your mother is surely a much greater thing than a dedicated day. Spend some time with her, talk to her. Then, if you’d like to treat her to something nice too, here are a few ideas.
Gift ideas
Will she be putting the feet up for the day? If so she will love Emjoi Micro Home Pedi (€39.95, pharmacies nationwide) which safely, gently and effectively buffs away hard, jagged and rough skin giving immediate lasting results, leaving mums’ feet softer and smoother.
To get her day off to a good start, think about giving her something to wake up her tired eyes and disguise those dark circles – No7 Beautiful Skin Dark Circle Corrector (€17.50, Boots).
She could follow this with a little luxurious REN Moroccan Rose Ultra Moisture Body Oil (€40, chemists and Health shops nationwide). This award-winner locks in moisture giving skin a healthy glow. REN, uses only 100 per cent plant and mineral actives and is free from synthetic ingredients, a cult favourite among celebrities.
REN also does ‘Evercalm’ (€35) a fabulous hydrating anti-redness serum that strengthens capillary walls and suits sensitive skin.
If she’d like to plump up the volume (and who wouldn’t!) then the moisture-boosting Nivea Cellular Anti-Age range is just the job. The day cream (50ml €15.99, chemists) helps reduce the appearance of wrinkles, improves firmness and boosts surface skin cell renewal, leaving it feeling smooth and silky. Available at pharmacies and stores nationwide.
Lancôme is giving away a beautiful gift worth up to €120 with the purchase of two Lancôme products. Available now until Sunday, March 30, exclusively at Staunton’s Pharmacy, Castlebar; Quinn’s Pharmacy, Ballina and Golden’s pharmacy, Westport. The Gift Contains Genifique (7ml), Hypnose Mascara (5ml), L’Absolu Rouge (1.6ml), Galateis Doucer (50ml), Tonique Doucer (50ml) and LeCrayon Khol Noir (0.7g).
For mums who like their scents, Dolce & Gabbana’s new perfume Dolce is a contemporary fragrance, a gentle, feminine mix of white flowers, introduced by the freshness of the Neroli leaves and defined by the White Amaryllis, a South African flower used for the first time ever in scent. She will love you for it!
Finally, if she’s tired and emotional after her special day then she can wipe the make up off away with WaterWipes (a snip at €3.49), purest sensitive make up removal wipes and 100 percent Irish. Available in Tesco, Dunnes Stores, SuperValu, Superquinn and pharmacies and health stores nationwide.
