BEAUTY Lashes and lips for Valentine’s

Bat those lashes and pucker up

Bat those lashes and pucker up

Maggie Gibbons

The official day of love is almost here, and it’s time to bat the lashes and pucker those lips. The first point of visual contact is the face, with eyes and lips being the main focus, so it’s worth making sure they’re looking their best this Valentine’s Day.

Lip service
The hottest lipstick shade is orange this season. However, if you’re happy with your particular shade and don’t want to change, make sure your lips are in tip top condition. I’m often asked how to keep lipstick fresh without having to reapply every hour or so. There are a few simple little tricks to keeping it in place all day/night.
First avoid getting cracked, dry lips during the cold spell. La Roche-Posay Cicaplast Lips (€6.50) gives lacklustre lips some serious TLC. Beneficial for all skin types. Ziaja Natural Olive Lip Balm (€1.99) with vitamins A and E and other natural ingredients also helps guard against dry, cracked, damaged lips.
Fill in bare lips with lip liner the same shade as your lip colour or go for a neutral liner in a close match to your natural lip colour. This will define the lips and create a great base. Line the very edge of your lip line first then apply lipstick or gloss. A lip brush will give a more precise finish. Face primer also provides an invisible barrier when applied with a small brush along the outer lip edges.
Dust powder over the lip area and reapply liner. Apply lipstick with a brush and blot excess with a tissue. Not a chance of your lip colour migrating after all that!

Eyes down
Yet again, Max Factor have raised the bar with New Excess Volume Extreme Impact Mascara (€16.99), their first ever two-brush, two-step jet-black gloss-finish mascara. We’re talking serious volume. The first step builds volume; the second step glosses the lashes for a ‘wet lash’ look. Sheer brilliance!
For him
For the man in your life, why not help him stay youthful with Shiseido Active Energizing Concentrate (€67) – it instantly provides firmness, corrects the appearance of damaged skin and boosts the skin’s vitality.
You could buy him a nice eau de cologne – but be careful, scents smell differently on different men. My top picks for a bit of fun are James Bond Ocean Royale, it’s great – smells gorgeous and won’t break the bank at €29 for the 30ml size – and the signature 007 Fragrance (€38 for 75ml; €52 for 125ml), a classic and unmistakably masculine scent with a sophisticated twist.
