Irish country stars to feature in TV3 doc
Jimmy Buckley and Robert Mizzell are both performing in McWilliam Park Hotel, Claremorris, in coming weeks – but their legions of fans won’t have to wait that long for a fix. Both stars feature in a documentary, ‘At home with Irish Country Music’, which airs at 9pm tomorrow night (Wednesday) on TV3.
Presenter Ciara Doherty speaks to country music fans and goes behind the scenes as Ireland’s biggest country-music artists perform gigs for their seasoned supporters. Jimmy Buckley and Robert Mizzell will feature large, as will singers Lisa McHugh and Derek Ryan, and Gerry Glennon of MidWest Radio and Irish West Music TV.
Commenting on the current ‘boom’ in Irish country music, Gerry Glennon discusses how its fan base is broadening: “Country has now come to town as they might say, and is popular in urban areas and rural areas.”
He adds: “It’s a way of life. It’s a lifestyle. It’s music that tells a story. It’s music that can be happy with people. It’s music that can be sad with people. In many ways it reflects ordinary life and people can identify with it.
“The younger artists [like Derek Ryan or Lisa McHugh] are not afraid to move with the times. They will make it as cool as they can make it. In fact I’d say some of them almost bring it to the edge. As I say, country is cool and it’s in the 21st century.”
Robert Mizzell is certainly bringing it to the edge. The documentary follows the star as he records a country music video for his new song, ‘Who’s Your Daddy’, which sees Mizzell dancing with six bikini-clad dancers. Hold on to your Stetsons folks.
Jimmy Buckley will play in the McWilliam Park Hotel on Saturday, September 27; Robert Mizzell will play in the same venue on Saturday, October 11.
