Noted ornithologist to focus on Mayo’s birds and how to draw them

Well-known ornithologist, writer, illustrator and educator Gordon D’Arcy will give an illustrated talk in Hotel Westport this Saturday,  February 26, at 4.30pm. He will speak in particular about the birds of Mayo and will show everyone attending some simple ways to draw them.
No experience is necessary, but be sure to bring along A4 sheets of paper or sketch pad plus some drawing materials.
George Keegan, PRO of the Mayo Branch of Birdwatch Ireland, said all at the branch were delighted when Gordon accepted the invitation to come to Westport. “He is well known throughout Ireland for wonderful bird illustrations and has written many books about nature and birdwatching, including ‘Guide to Birds of Ireland’ and ‘The Breathing Burren’. As an artist he says that he was inspired by nature in all its forms.”
Gordon has lived close to the famous Burren in County Clare for over 30 years. He leads fieldtrips around the area, gives many talks in schools around Ireland and lectures in the Burren College of Art in Ballyvaughan.
“It should be a really enjoyable afternoon for all the family,” George added.
The talk will commence at 4.30pm. Admission which includes tea/coffee and a free draw is €5 for non members of Birdwatch Ireland, €4 for members and seniors, and there is no charge for children. Admission will be payable at the door but as places may be limited, be sure to arrive early.

Next month, the branch is holding an outing to Belleek Woods, Ballina, on Saturday, March 26, to hear early spring birds and to explore the fauna and flora of the woods. All are welcome.
