Not to be outdone by Dublin’s Bloom, Mayo has its very own floral extravaganza. The Westport Flower Festival, now in its second year, will take place from Friday, July 1 to Sunday, July 3. The festival launch took place last week in glorious sunshine; a good sign for the festival proper.
All proceeds from the festival are in aid of restoration work at Holy Trinity Church, the lofty spire of which is an iconic element of Westport’s skyline. However, the historic building is in need of urgent attention if it is to remain for future generations to enjoy.
The restoration works on the church are already underway, as is evident from the scaffolding at the front and side of the building. The next phase will focus on the stonework around the stained glass windows, as well as the lovely windows themselves.
Last year, was the first incarnation of this lovely festival, and it was immediately taken to the collective community heart. Floral arrangements and tributes were created by amateurs and professionals alike, many in memory of family members and loved ones no longer with us.
The beautiful interior of the church is the perfect setting for arrangements of all sizes, and the scent of so many fresh flowers is truly wonderful.
In typical Westport style, the concept of a flower festival has been adapted to suit, and refreshments from Holy Trinity Café and music both complement the main attractions. The plant stall will carry an excellent range of home-raised plants and seedlings to bring home – a living memento of the Westport Flower Festival.
Midwest Radio’s Tommy Marren will perform the official opening this year, which takes place on Friday, July 1 at 8pm, and everyone is invited to attend.
Westport Flower Festival is open from 11am to 6pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, July 1, 2 and 3, and admission is a5. Anyone who would like to take part in Westport Flower Festival should contact Steve on 086 6961329, or email email@example.com.
