Ideas for local shopping this Christmas

Maggie Gibbons

This year, more than ever before, we need to spend locally. Small businesses have been decimated, so get in there and check out some of the wonderful crafters and their offerings. The west of Ireland is pretty amazing when it comes to great crafts, candles, books, oils etc. If you can’t get what you want locally, than at least commit to buying Irish this Christmas.
The Mayo Voucher is a brand new concept in shopping local. It’s a central gift voucher that can be redeemed at any one of hundreds of participating shops around the county. It makes shopping so easy. Purchase from anywhere in the world. Click on and away you go!

Are you searching for a unique Christmas gift, or just looking to create a special Irish atmosphere and need a real west of Ireland scent to welcome visitors? ClewBay Candles, based in Moneen, Louisburgh, are lovingly hand-poured with 100 percent soya wax, evoking the unique soothing scents of the Atlantic. In tins or jars, they’re really well priced from €9.95 to €13.99. Christmas-themed candles like ‘Mulled Wine and Berries’ and ‘Winter Wonderland’ will make a gorgeous gift. Visit their website,, or call them on 087 3990852.
Check out the candles from Erris-based Gaol Siar too. Each candle is blended with oils distilled from the wild plants and captures the essence of Summer in Erris. The candles come in five different scents and three different sizes, and can be purchased on their online shop at, or call 087 2169625.

A book voucher is such a great gift, and seeing we’ve all been reading more than usual this year, and probably will be for some months to come, you won’t go wrong here.
Tertulia bookshop at Westport Quay is offering a special postage rate of €2.95 on books. They’ve joined forces with Marlene’s Chocolate Haven for Christmas, and every book sent will include a delicious piece of Marlene’s chocolate. Yummy! Marlene’s have some scrumptious chocolate gifts, I’m salivating while I write!
Duffy’s Bookshop on Westport’s Bridge Street is family owned and also well worth a visit for books and for art supplies. They go out of their way to oblige their customers, which is fantastic!

A bit further afield but a must mention is Irish company Kinvara, in particular their Radiance Ready Gift Set (€39.95), which contains Hyaluronic Youth Boost, and 24hr Rosehip Face Serum, two amazing skin products. I’ve long been a fan of Kinvara, both of their efficacy and value. Kinvara’s Absolute Cleansing Oil Gift Set (€22.95) is gorgeous too. Visit to find out more.
Another great Irish company, Green Angel, uses seaweeds and essential oils in their exclusive product range. Their Day & Night Gift Set (€59) contains seaweed collagen face cream and seaweed night cream. At just €15, the Little Green Angel Overnight Bag offers amazing value. It contains four 30ml products, each containing a blend of seaweed and essential oil – a shower gel, a body lotion, a shampoo and a hair conditioning serum. The perfect gift or stocking filler, available at Chemists nationwide or at
Sana Naturals’ Kasia O’Reilly is on a mission to share with you the magic of plants and minerals through handcrafted skincare products, to help heal and nurture skin. The products at Sana ( are multifunctional, reducing the number of products and steps in the skincare routine, saving you time. They’re also hand made in Ireland, and natural, eco friendly, vegan and cruelty free. Their rose-quartz face roller (once used in beauty rituals in ancient China for multiple skin benefits) and luxurious oil serum with vitamin comes with a lovely cotton pouch for easy storage, and would make a gorgeous gift (€57.95).

Baby beauty
‘Just a little girl’ is a Mayo based company with everything you could possibly want for your precious bundle. Their Baby Pink Baby Gift Set (€40) – the perfect gift for any little baby girl – contains two adorable bibs, three bow headbands and one turban. Their Weaning Starter Sets (€24.95) contain a silicone bib, bowl and spoon set, and come in two colours – nude and bubblegum.

This Christmas, remember to check with your local boutiques, chemists, restaurants and coffee shops to see what they’re offering. There is so much innovation this year, it really will be easy to get something for everyone on your gift list while also supporting local makers and producers.
