Music lovers from all over the west of Ireland are in for a very special treat on Friday,  August 14, when mezzo soprano Fiona Murphy sings in the Park Hotel, Kiltimagh.
Fiona has performed many leading roles with several major opera companies in the United States, the UK and Ireland, including The Opera Company of Philadelphia, The Welsh National Opera and Opera Ireland. She has performed to over 18,000 people at the Hollywood Bowl, Los Angeles, in a star-studded production of Bizet’s masterpiece Carmen.
The beautiful singer also won critical acclaim earlier this year when she starred as Valencienne in The Merry Widow opposite Alfie Boe’s Camille with the English National Opera in London’s Coliseum Theatre. She recently made her New York debut at the Lincoln Centre in Mozart’s Clemenza di Tito.
Fiona is a daughter of Garda Commissioner, Fachtna Murphy and Ann Reilly, who is a native of Kiltimagh. She is an honours graduate of University College Dublin and the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia.
Fiona returned to Ireland a number of months ago to sing with Opera Ireland in the Irish premiere of a Mid Summers Night’s Dream at the Gaiety Theatre. She also recently performed in The Helix Theatre at a gala evening with Peter Corry in aid of the IRFU Charitable Trusts.
Now it is Kiltimagh’s turn. During her evening at the Park Hotel she will perform songs from musicals, including Les Miserables, Show Boat, Evita and Carousel. She will also perform several popular Irish songs, including Moore’s Melodies and Moonlight in Mayo, as well as some popular classical pieces like Habenera from Carmen and Nella Fantasia. Fiona will be accompanied by pianist, Mairéad Hurley and will be supported by DC4, a barbershop quartet from north Mayo and a group of local Irish dancers.
A donation from the proceeds of Fiona’s concert at the Park Hotel will be made to the Western Care Association. Tickets for the concert, which starts at 8.30pm, cost €15 each.
