One of Ireland’s best-loved folk singers John Spillane is performing in Westport this weekend. The gig, which will be his biggest yet in Westport, will be in the Mill Times Hotel this Friday, July 17. He went down a storm at the Westport Arts Festival last year, and Friday’s performance is sure to be packed to the rafters.
A two-time Meteor Award winner, John is one of the most accomplished songwriters in Ireland today. Many big names have covered his songs, including Christy Moore, Karan Casey, Pauline Scanlon, Cathy Ryan, Sharon Shannon, Sean Keane, George Murphy, to name a few. He performs to audiences large and small everywhere.
Spillane’s entertaining concerts stand as testament to his ability to draw an audience of all ages and musical tastes. He’s very comfortable in his skin – whether performing solo with guitar, with gentle accompaniment or with full band before ten, 10,000 or 100,000, John entertains, charms and mesmerizes.
Vocally, he is quite unique with an almost sean nós-like element in his singing. John’s performances see him effortlessly flit between beautiful poetry tinged with melancholy to roguish, irreverent Cork humour. If you are looking for a night of good ‘craic’, a John Spillane show should not be missed.
Friday’s concert in The Mill Times Hotel has been organised by Electric Cave Productions. Tickets cost €10; the gig starts at 9pm. Be sure to get there early to catch young Westport singer/songwriter Orla Casey, who’s providing the support.
