Auburn’s fascinating ‘Proof’ to be staged in Westport

Going Out

BACK IN TOWN Galway’s Glenamaddy Players are returning to Westport with a new production.

Following a sellout performance last year with their award winning adaptation of ‘The Cripple of Inishmaan’, by Martin McDonagh, the Glenamaddy Players return to Westport Town Hall Theatre with their production ‘Proof’, by David Auburn, on Saturday, January 21.
Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and a Tony Award, Auburn’s play is a moving exploration of the nature of genius, women in mathematics, and father-daughter relationships.
The Glenamaddy Players celebrated their 50th anniversary last year with a team of talented actors and a skilled and dedicated crew. The group has had huge success over the years. Qualifying for the All Ireland Three-Act Confined finals on several occasions, their most most recent was in 2022 with ‘The Cripple of Inishmaan’, by Martin McDonagh, which finished in second place. The group are delighted to be returning to Westport once again following their sell out show last year.
The story centres on an enigmatic woman, her brilliant father, and an unanticipated suitor. After the discovery of a ground breaking proof, Catherine is confronted with the question of how much of her mathematician father’s brilliance did she inherit – and is that the only thing he passed on to her?
This award-winning play is clever and fast paced, creating moments of wit, hilarity and pain with equal impact. Auburn’s work is astonishing in its ability to create comedic and heart-wrenching moments that feel realistic and not at all staged.
