Westport contemporary folk musician Brian Duffy is releasing his third solo album, ‘The Walk’, in Matt Molloy’s on Sunday, September 18.
“This album was written during lockdown and is a mixture of many different feelings and emotions that would have occurred for a lot of people during lockdown,” the singer-songwriter tells The Mayo News.
‘The Walk’ is another collaboration with producer Donogh Hennessy in Dingle, who Duffy says helped him craft these songs ‘to their ultimate potential’.
“I would describe my music as a mixture of traditional Irish music influenced with a mixture of Latin and Asturian music.
“I lived for eight years in the north west of Spain (where the principality of Asturias is located) and played with several musicians from around the world. I feel there is an influence of world-music fusion incorporated into this latest body of music… the songs describe everything from family loss to dealing with illness, and songs of love and hope, which I feel will help the listener to overcome trials of everyday life along their journey.”
This aim is close to the musician’s heart. “Music is the healer and is the source for helping people, and a place of meditation, a distraction from the normal, which is necessary for everyone,” he adds.
Duffy says the pandemic helped him find a ‘new creative space’, which ultimately lead to the album. He ran a series of online lockdown concerts called ‘Sofa So Good’, which he believes helped him stay in touch with his music, and helped those who watched get through difficult times.
Duffy released his first album ‘I Am So’ in 2012, four years after returning to Westport. Prior to that he had been living and touring in Spain with his trad/folk trio On The Level. His second solo collection, ‘Something in a Melody’, was released in December 2016.
Back in 2016, he remarked how for him, ‘inspirations vary’. “Love, acts of kindness. Life is fascinating and inspiring to me.
Living and experiencing life. People and how they overcome challenges inspire me,” he revealed. Now, commenting on his new album, it seems this theme of survival is revisited: “The music I have created on this album is a testament to persistence and not giving up on your dreams.”

The launch of Brian Duffy’s album ‘The Walk’ will be held in Matt Molloy’s Yard Bar on Sunday, September 18, at 9pm. Admission free.
