Westport Jazz dedicates April gig to Ukraine

Going Out

Westport Jazz’s April gig – featuring the Donal Hoban Quartet – is a fundraiser for Ukraine, with musicians’ fees and all proceeds from tickets being donated to the Irish Red Cross.
The Donal Hoban Quartet is a Mayo based group of musicians with diverse backgrounds and musical styles. Its line-up is comprised of Chris Darby, originally from Scotland but resident in Ballina, on bass; Castlebar resident, New Zealander Michael Buckton on guitar; Westport resident Mervyn Sayers, from Carlow, on saxophone and the man himself, Ballintubber’s Donal Hoban on drums.
The band offers a blend of jazz-fusion-inspired music with a diverse range of influences, including Ronnie Jordan, Bill Withers, Steve Gadd and George Duke.
Westport Jazz has been fortunate to gather a  pre-planned series of gigs together this year, receiving for the first time some generous Arts Council funding for our growing programme along with our great local town and county council support and an ever growing audience base to support wider and more adventurous invitation to musicians from all over to come our way and play.
The group’s first gig of 2022 was a storming night by Richie Buckley’s immense sax sound backed by a truly great Quintet, and the members are planning a gig a month on a regular Friday night slot in Madden’s Bar of the Clew Bay Hotel on James Street, Westport. Richie is due to return in October to a larger Westport Town Hall gig with the same line-up and the addition of jazz master piano man, John Donegan as his Irish Sextet.

Friday, April 1, doors open 8.30pm for gig at 9pm. Madden’s Bar, Clew Bay Hotel, Westport.
