Tense two-hander ‘Eden’ to be staged in Westport

AWARD-WINNING DRAMA Patrick Ryan and Maeve Fitzgerald on stage in ‘Eden’, a searing exploration of marital breakdown and taboo topics.

Comedian Conal Gallen also back at Westport Town Hall Theatre

In a real treat for theatre goers, Maeve Fitzgerald and Patrick Ryan will star in the award-winning drama ‘Eden’, by Eugene O’Brien, in Westport Town Hall Theatre this Saturday night, November 13. The performance marks acclaimed Galway-based Decadent Theatre Company first outing in Westport.
A story of stale love and fresh lust in the Irish midlands, the play is a searing exploration of marital breakdown and taboo topics, such as Irish masculinity, sexual dysfunction and Ireland’s relationship with alcohol. The play’s two brilliantly drawn characters open their hearts to audiences with honesty, humour and heartbreak.
Interestingly, the play’s touring history has been plagued by plagues, but this tense two-hander is ideally suited to the Covid era, according to Andrew Flynn, Decadent’s artistic director.
“This year happens to be Eden’s 20th anniversary,” he explains. “It premiered in 2001 and, bizarrely, that tour was cancelled because of foot and mouth disease.
“Social distancing is intrinsic to the play because the two characters are completely alienated from each other. The play’s structure demands that the characters never meet, interact or touch. They are in their own worlds on the stage and don’t even know the other is there.”
Playwright O’Brien will be known to many from the hit RTÉ drama ‘Pure Mule’. ‘Eden’ won Best New Play at both the Irish Times Theatre Awards and the Stewart Parker Awards in 2001. It has been performed in London’s West End and on Broadway, and has been translated into several languages.

Stand-up comedy
For those looking for a more lighthearted night out, well-known Irish Comedian Conal Gallen will take to the stage at Westport Town Hall Theatre on Friday, November 12, at 8pm. After almost two years of not performing, Conal is ready to return to what he does best – entertain.
His return to the stage of Westport Town Hall is one that he has been eagerly awaiting, and he is looking forward to presenting his ever popular stand-up comedy show where audiences are guaranteed a big night of hilarious yarns, lots of laughter and some great craic.
