Westport Jazz, a group of local jazz lovers dedicated to bringing top-class acts to the town, is hosting another free show in the Clew Bay Hotel’s Madden’s Bar on Friday, February 28, at 8pm. On the line-up this time are Tritone, Joanne Keegan, Nicky Dowd and Ain’t Misbehavin’.
Special guest on the night will be PJ Duffy, the well-known sax player and now-retired publican from Ballina. His pub on Ballina’s Clare Street is famed for its regular jazz sessions, and he now plays weekly himself. For the Clew Bay gig, he will be joined by another saxophone player, Melvyn Sayers, with Ger McNally on keys and Donal Hoban on drums.
Tritone plays a wide array of jazz styles, including bebop, blues, cool jazz, fusion, hard bop, Latin and swing. Expect a wide range of jazz standards, plus a variety of jazz-styled tunes.
Celebrated Westport blues, jazz and roots artist Joanne Keegan launched her debut album ‘Moody Woman’ to great fanfare and an appreciative crowd at last year’s Westival, when she also was joined on stage by multi-talented artist and singer Nicky Dowd.
Popular local jazz trio Ain’t Misbehavin’ – comprised of Aisling Smyth and Michael and Joseph Halloran – also launched a CD last year (eponymously titled ‘Ain’t Misbehavin’), and they have been playing together for over eight years now.
Westport Jazz has another busy year ahead, with plans to bringing plenty of local, national and international jazz to the town every month. Keep an eye on these pages in The Mayo News and the Westport Jazz page on Facebook and for news about upcoming shows.
