MUSIC MAKERS Chris Dawson, Maurice Lennon and Ciara Brennan.
Catch top trad trio in Maurice Lennon, Ciara Brennan and Chris Dawson in Matt Molloy’s Yard Bar, Westport, on Thursday, February 6, and listen in awe as they combine their musical prowess to produce a dynamic and diverse repertoire of traditional and newly composed music.
A founding member of Stockton’s Wing, Maurice Lennon is one of Ireland’s leading fiddle players and the creator of countless well-known compositions.
Fellow violin player, Dublin-born Ciara Brennan is also a keen singer songwriter, and she has won all-Ireland titles in violin, solo singing and the not-so-common art of lilting.
UK multi-instrumentist Chris Dawson, originally from the Manchester area, principally plays traditional flutes and whistles and the cittern and the bouzouki, but he is also a dab hand at other instruments, including the bodhrán, the mandolin and the didgeridoo.
Ciara and Chris, having performed, composed and recorded intensely together over recent years, were already become well acquainted and connected as a duet before this latest collaboration.
Having played together for Maurice’s Brian Boru suite, Maurice and Ciara have also recently reconnected after many years. The two very different violin players with different styles and backgrounds have found a deep understanding and expression of the tradition between them that creates a natural ‘oneness’ when they play together.
With a profound respect for each other, the connection between all three musicians can be seen and felt by all who watch them perform together.
The gig in Matt Molloy’s will feature compositions by Maurice and by Ciara and Chris, along with music from the Irish, Swedish and the Northern English folk traditions.
The gig starts at 8pm, and tickets will be available on the door.
