Celebrating Margaret Burke Sheridan

Going Out

TRIBUTE Biographer Anne Chambers will be joined by a line-up of stellar singers to remember one of Castlebar’s finest.

An exciting night for opera lovers, ‘Margaret Burke Sheridan, Castlebar-born Diva: an Anniversary Celebration in Words and Music’ takes place at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on tomorrow evening (Wednesday), October 30, at 8pm.
The evening will feature contributions from biographer Anne Chambers (author of ‘La Sheridan: Adorable Diva’), mezzo soprano Anne Marie Gibbons, soprano Helene Hutchinson-Murray and tenor Hubert Francis, with piano accompaniment by Siobhán Kilkelly.
Born in Castlebar 130 years ago, Margaret Burke Sheridan became the toast of the great opera houses of Italy and the star attraction at the international seasons at Covent Garden. One of the stars of the ‘golden age’ of opera at La Scala, she was taken under Puccini’s wing and is celebrated today as ‘an unparalleled interpreter’ of his music.
This anniversary concert will celebrate the extraordinary life of this Castlebar native, interspersed with performances of the music that made her famous.
