Westport Jazz, a local group of jazz fans dedicated to bringing high-quality live jazz to Mayo, is hosting two not-to-be-missed shows in their home town over the coming days.
Firstly, as part of Culture Night, the group is putting on a special show – Jazz Stories – this Friday, September 20, in Madden’s Bar in The Clew Bay Hotel, Westport, from 7pm to 10pm.
The night will feature an interview with Westport’s own jazz legend Larry Hingerton by Werner Lewon of CRC FM, during which Larry will talk about his lifetime of playing jazz in Mayo.
The evening will also include music from Tritone, with Ger McNally on the keyboard, Donal Hoban on drums and Chris Darby on bass. The musicians will play original works, jazz standards and well-known melodies. They will also talk about the music they are playing and their own ‘jazz stories’.
Dermot McCabe, AKA DJ Mr Whippy, will also be spinning a few jazz records, talking about them and the story of jazz as he feels it shapes dance subculture. Special guests on the night will include jazz singers and instrumentalists from the Westport area.
The following Wednesday, September 25, will see another evening of great jazz at the same venue, this time featuring renowned guitarists Julien Colarossi and John Keogh, who will be joined by celebrated vocalist Susannah de Wrixon.
As an act of national acclaim, known simply as Julien & John, Colarossi and Keogh have a growing reputation for wonderful guitar playing and superb arrangements of popular tunes. They have released two albums in recent years. The choice of playing an archtop and a Spanish guitar accentuates the different landscape of sounds that both Colarossi and Keogh bring to the music, and the implementation of percussive techniques makes for a ‘jazzier and groovier’ sound.
Susannah de Wrixon has been charming audiences for years with her exquisite voice, keen wit and distinctive choice of song. She has toured with The Nualas, made regular appearances on stage and screen and performed on numerous occasions in the National Concert Hall. She is an impressive singer, and her collaboration with Colarossi and Keogh is a match made in heaven.
The trio’s performance will start at 8.30pm. Audience contribution on the door.
