Castlebar Musical and Dramatic Society will present Robert Harling’s critically acclaimed and much-loved play ‘Steel Magnolias’ in the Linenhall Theatre, Castlebar on May 27 and May 28 and in the Town Hall Theatre, Westport, on May 29 and 30.
Described by critics as ‘the funniest play ever to make you cry’, ‘Steel Magnolias’ has delighted Broadway and West End audiences. It is of course also well known for its hugely successful screen adaptation, which featured the talents of Hollywood’s finest and received an Academy Award nomination for Julia Roberts’ performance as ‘Shelby’.
‘Steel Magnolias’ allows audiences the chance to be a fly on the wall of a small beauty parlour in Louisiana and eavesdrop on the conversations of six women, as they share their joys, hopes and heartache – and indulge in a little small-town gossip! The play spans a number of years and, through the ups and downs, the women’s friendship is tested but their strong-bond helps them deal with the joys and tragedies of life.
This production of ‘Steel Magnolias’ promises to have audiences enthralled with its light-hearted comedy, quirky characters and heart-rending storyline.
The play heralds Castlebar Musical and Dramatic Society’s third drama season, following previous sell-out productions of Brian Friel’s ‘Lovers’ and Conor McPherson’s ‘The Weir’ in Westport and Castlebar theatres. This year’s production will be brought to life by Mayo-based director, Caroline Barry.

All performances will start at 8pm. For tickets to the Castlebar show, visit the Linenhall Arts Centre at or call on 094 9023733; for tickets to the Westport show, visit Westport Town Hall Theatre at or call 098 28459.
