The Westport Film Club will be screening the genre-defying ‘Border’ tomorrow evening (Wednesday), April 3, at 8.45pm in the W Cinema.
It is too simple to call ‘Border’ a Swedish fantasy film, with elements of romance, noir, social realism and supernatural horror – it is a complex and dark adult fairytale. Based on a short story from the writer of ‘Let The Right One In’, the film follows Tina, a customs officer with facial deformities and an extraordinarily heightened sense of smell.
Her abilities are invaluable at work, where she can detect guilt and fear from a person’s scent, but she lives an isolated life in the woods. When Vore passes through the airport, Tina sees and smells something she never has before – someone like her.
The remarkable transformation of the lead actor, Eva Melander, into Tina was recognised with a nomination for Best Makeup and Hairstyling at this year’s Academy Awards. The film previously won the Un Certain Regard award at Cannes 2018 and multiple Gulbagge awards – the Swedish equivalent of the Oscars – including Best Film, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actor.
‘Border’ is a bold and exciting film that takes the viewer on an unpredictable journey with a nontraditional heroine. It is 110 minutes long and in Swedish with English subtitles. The film comes with a 16 rating from IFCO, as it contains strong violence and sexual content, with moderate language and references to child abuse.
Westport Film Club’s final screening of the spring season will be the critically acclaimed and Oscar-nominated Japanese film ‘Shoplifters’ on May 1.

Tickets and membership can be purchased in the W Cinema from 8.30pm on Wednesday, April 3. Non-Members are always welcome; guests pay €10 entry per film.
