Taoiseach welcomes €1.5 million fibre broadband announcement

A €1.5 million project involving the installation of fibre broadband in Castlebar has been welcomed by An Taoiseach Enda Kenny.

The project will involve the installation of fibre broadband across the town and will connect the main commercial and industrial zones. The construction of the project is due to commence shortly with site preparation works already under way and the new infrastructure project is scheduled for completion in November of this year. The project will involve 25 jobs locally.

An Taoiseach Enda Kenny described the project as a ‘very important infrastructural project for Castlebar.

“The project announced by Enet today is a vital step forward for Castlebar. It will deliver a world-class fibre network in a regional location. I very much welcome this announcement and I especially wish to commend the work of Enet for bringing this initiative to fruition. Enet already have a number of projects in Mayo and their new €1.5 million investment in the county is significant,” said the Taoiseach.

A number of businesses have already signalled their interest to connect to the network and demand is said to be very positive.

Enet will make the infrastructure available on a wholesale open access basis to retail telecommunication service providers in the Castlebar area. The fibre network will be a major benefit to multi-nationals, local industry, online based businesses, and the government sector, following construction and connection by service providers.

The fibre will run through ducting to areas such as Main Street, the Mall, Mayo General Hospital, GMIT Mayo Campus, and the industrial zone on the Breaffy Road.

“The new infrastructure will assist enterprise agencies such as the IDA, Enterprise Ireland, and the Mayo Local Enterprise Office in their ongoing efforts...The construction of a new fibre network is good for Castlebar and this is part of a number of upcoming improvements to the broadband infrastructure in Mayo,” he concluded.
