O’Shea brothers to make history

THREE brothers will start a championship match for Mayo for only the second time in more than 70 years when Seamus, Aidan and Conor O’Shea line out in the Connacht SFC semi-final against Roscommon on Sunday (Hyde Park, 2pm).
The Breaffy trio will follow in the footsteps of the Mortimer brothers from Shrule/Glencorrib, Kenneth, Trevor and Conor, who all started against Fermanagh in an All-Ireland SFC Qualifier in 2003.
The Laffey brothers from Moy Davitts, Peter, Jimmy and Tim, also achieved the notable distinction when they all started for Mayo in the 1940 Connacht Final.
The O’Shea brothers also played together against New York last month, after Conor (21) was introduced as a second half substitute to make his senior championship debut.
The Mayo team to face Roscommon was announced last night (Wednesday) and shows three changes from the side that beat New York: Ger Cafferkey, Conor O’Shea and Alan Freeman are all introduced with Kevin Keane, Jason Gibbons and Andy Moran dropping out.
Moran, the team captain, is the highest-profile absentee from the starting line-up but is expected to be named among the replacements.
So too are Chris Barrett and Alan Dillon, who have both recovered from their respective injury problems but have only played one hour of football between them since last September’s All-Ireland Final against Dublin.
Diarmuid O’Connor, who won an All-Ireland Minor medal last year, retains his place at wing-forward and lines out in attack alongside his brother, Cillian.
Mayo will be captained on Sunday by Lee Keegan.
