Michael Commins

THE tragic death of Jarlath Kelly of Derrynacong, Ballyhaunis, in a road traffic accident last Saturday caused widespread shock and sadness in the area. Jarlath, who was in his late 40s, was cycling into Ballyhaunis when his bicycle and a car were in collision at Classaghroe, Ballyhaunis, around two miles from the town.
Jarlath was a regular cyclist on this road that he travelled a few times every week while going to town for the messages. It is understood that he had recently acquired a new bicycle.
The accident occurred close to a bend on the road. It is also understood that there was a car coming towards him and another behind him (which was involved in the collision) at the time of the accident.
Jarlath was described by people in the area as a man of quiet disposition who was “well read” and took an active interest in politics, current affair, GAA and soccer. He kept himself fully informed on these matters through the newspapers, radio and television.
Removal takes place from Gavin’s Funeral Home, Knox Street, Ballyhaunis this Tuesday evening at 7pm to St Patrick’s Church, Ballyhaunis with interment in the local cemetery following 11am Mass on Wednesday morning.
