Greenway reopened after closure dispute

The section of the Great Western Greenway in Achill which was closed in recent weeks has been reopened, The Mayo News has learned.
The Greenway was closed for a one mile section at Tonragee, as a result of a dispute between a local man and Mayo County Council.
A high fence was erected blocking progress along the Greenway and cyclists and walkers had to cycle along the main R319.
However, the fence was removed on Friday last and The Mayo News understands discussions over issues at the heart of the dispute are ongoing.
The Great Western Greenway from Westport to Achill was built with the consent of landowners along the route, who gave up their land for the amenity, which has proven a huge success from a tourism point of view. While it is off-season at the minute, cyclists are still using the Greenway on a daily basis.
