MAYO easily accounted for an outclassed GMIT outfit in this one-sided FBD Connacht League match in Ballinrobe on Wednesday evening.
A huge crowd of approximately 1,000 people turned up but, unfortunately, the game was over as a contest at half-time with Mayo leading by 1-9 to 0-2.
James Horan’s experimental selection understandably eased off considerably after the restart and they freewheeled home with fourteen points to spare.
Richie Feeney, who lined out at centre-forward, scored their goal in the 20th minute after an exquisite pass from the outstanding Alan Freeman.
Freeman helped himself to five points in that opening half (three from play, a free and a sweetly-struck 45m kick) as GMIT failed to apply any pressure.
All Star defender Lee Keegan, who lined out in the forwards, also chipped in with a couple of points as Mayo did as they pleased.
GMIT’s only contributions to the scoreboard were a couple of Johnny Ryan points (one from a free) in the 26th and 29th minutes.
Teenager Conor O’Shea added Mayo’s second goal eight minutes into the second half with Freeman, Keegan and Feeney also topping up their individual tallies.
GMIT finally raised a gallop midway through the second half, with the game long gone, and three points in a row took the bare look off their meagre tally.
However, Mayo glossed the final scoreline with points from James Shaughnessy and the accurate Alan Freeman to finish their work for the evening.
Next stop for Mayo is Ballyhaunis next Sunday as they take on Roscommon at 2pm.
