Dillon named Mayo football captain

BALLINTUBBER’S Alan Dillon has been appointed as the Mayo senior football team captain for Championship 2011.
The 28 years-old, who made his championship debut in 2003, will lead Mayo out for the first time against Antrim in a challenge match in Kiltimagh on Sunday, May 1.
Ballaghaderreen’s Andy Moran (27) has been named as Mayo’s vice-captain.
“It was a hard call to make,” James Horan told mayonews.ie
“We’re very lucky to have two phenomenal leaders like Alan and Andy and both will continue to be leaders in this group.”
The Mayo manager confirmed that “there are a few places still up for grabs” before he finalises his 30-man championship squad for Mayo’s trip to London on Sunday, May 29.
“We’ll be bringing in a few lads to have a look at them in training and it’ll be interesting to see what comes of that,” he said.
Horan also dismissed reports that former Mayo captain Trevor Mortimer had been ruled out of contention for a spot in county panel this summer.
“It’s not fair to say that Trevor is out of our plans at the moment,” commented the Mayo boss. “That story grew legs of its own. We’ve talked to him and he knows he’s being assessed over these few weeks, like a few other players.
“We’re giving guys every chance to show us what they can do.”
Mayo’s next outing is against Antrim on Sunday week next at Gilmartin Park, Kiltimagh.
A challenge match has also been pencilled in for Saturday, May 14 in Ballintubber. The opposition has yet to be officially confirmed but it likely to be Offaly.
