Four in running for top award
County finalists dominate the Player of Year shortlist
THE shortlist for the sixth annual Club Stars ‘Senior Footballer of the Year’ has been revealed with two players from Ballintubber and two from Castlebar Mitchels vying for the prestigious award.
The Mayo News selection committee have selected Alan Dillon, Jason Gibbons and Alan and Richie Feeney as their nominees, with the winner to receive the Willie McNeela Perpetual Trophy at the sixth annual Mayo News/O’Neills Club Stars Charity Banquet in Knockranny House Hotel, Westport on Friday, December 3.
The winner will be selected by the public via an online poll on The Mayo News website and voting began last night (Monday). The poll will close at 5pm on Thursday, December 2.
Only a very limited number of tickets are still available for the gala event, which is hosted in association with AIB. With all proceeds going to the Mayo Cystic Fibrosis, there has been unprecedented support for this year’s awards ceremony.
Burrishoole duo James Moran and Jason Doherty, as well as Tourmakeady’s Brendan Prendergast, are in the running for the Intermediate Player of the Year while Parke’s Simon Cloherty and Tom Walsh, as well as Islandeady’s Ollie Feeney, are competing for the Junior Player of the Year accolade.
The Club Stars Team of the Year will also be announced on the night.
Former Tyrone footballer Peter Canavan, who won two All-Ireland senior medals, will be the special guest on the night. Liam Horan will again act as Master of Ceremonies.
“We’re privileged to have someone of Liam’s calibre at our disposal,” said Michael Duffy, Editor of The Mayo News. “He’s the best in the business at getting a night going, knowing how to work a crowd and, of course, he knows his football. We’re looking forward to seeing him in action.”
“The Mayo GAA Board are delighted to be behind the Club Stars again this year,” said County Secretary Seán Feeney, one of the selection committee. “It has established itself as the traditional end-of-season social on the Mayo GAA calendar, and is always a great night.”
