A Castlebar native was a member of the crew aboard the ill-fated RMS Titanic. William Luke Duffy was the clerk to the Chief Engineer on the ship and it was his first sailing as a crew member on any ship.
Duffy was lost at sea, aged 36. He was married and living in Southampton, England. He had been living in Dublin for a long time before this.
He was born on October 8, 1875 in Castlebar to civil engineer Joseph Duffy and his wife Ellen, nee Ward. He was educated in St Jarlath’s College, Tuam. Duffy later spent two years as a clerk in Shackleton’s Flour Milling, Co Dublin, before taking another job with James Walker and Co, Dublin. He married, and moved to England, settling in Southampton. He and his wife, Ethel, had a daughter, Mary.
