INDEPENDENT newcomer Joe Faughnan has kept a councillor in Knockmore after he was elected to Mayo County Council in the early hours of this morning.
Cllr Faughnan and sitting councillors Michael Loftus (Fianna Fáil) and Jarlath Munnelly (Fine Gael) filled the final three seats in the Ballina Municipal District Council and on Mayo County Council when they were elected on the eleventh count without reaching the quota of 1,769.
Cllr Faughnan's election comes following the retirement of fellow Knockmore man Séamus Weir spent 25 councillor with Fine Gael and as an Independent.
The newly-elected councillor is well-known in Mayo soccer as manager of Conn Rangers and a member of the Mayo Football League committee,
The three recently-elected councillors finished ahead of Fianna Fáil candidate David Alexander, who finished with a total of 1,296 votes.
Cllrs Faughnan, Munnelly and Loftus were deemed elected after the elimination Sinn Féin's Úna Morris, who finished with 795 votes in total, 439 of which were non-transferable.

Claremorris: Patsy O'Brien (Independent), Richard Finn (Independent), Damien Ryan (Fianna Fáil), Alma Gallagher (Fine Gael), Michael Burke (Fine Gael), Paul Lawless (Aontú)
Belmullet: Paul McNamara (Fianna Fáil), Sean Carey (Fianna Fáil), Gerry Coyle (Fine Gael)
Westport: Chris Maxwell (Independent Ireland), Peter Flynn (Fine Gael), John O'Malley (Independent), Brendan Mulroy (Fianna Fáil)
Swinford: Gerry Murray (Sinn Féin), Adrian Forkan (Fianna Fáil), John Caulfield (Fianna Fáil), Neil Cruise (Fine Gael)
