NEILL O’NEILL CREATIVITY AWARDS
Photography

Please ensure you read these rules carefully before entering the competition.
Entry implies acceptance of all the rules and failure to comply may result in disqualification.

GENERAL
Opening and closing dates:
Competition opens 9am, Monday, February 4, 2019
Entries close 5pm, Friday, March 29, 2019
Winners announced in The Mayo News, Tuesday, May 14, 2019 (Please note new date, due to large volume of entries.)

THEME
Entrants are invited to submit work under the theme ‘What Mayo Means to Me’. This theme is a guide that must be adhered to. Entrants are free to place a different title on their photograph.
The work must be accompanied by a short explanation (between 50 and 200 words) as to how the artwork reflects the competition’s theme, ‘What Mayo Means to Me’. This explanation should be included in the email for online entries or, for postal entries, in the cover letter (see Submissions).

ENTRANTS
Open to anyone who lives or has lived in Mayo, or who has a strong connection to the county.
Mayo News employees, columnists and freelancers are not eligible to enter. Judges and their immediate families are also ineligible.

JUDGING
Entries will be judged based on the following criteria: Quality of execution, composition and technique; overall impression of the photograph and how well it represents the competition theme.
The judges’ decision is final and no individual correspondence can be entered into. Judges are unable to comment on individual entries.

SUBMISSIONS

Entries must be entirely the work of the entrant and by submitting you are confirming that the work is your own. Any evidence to the contrary will result in immediate disqualification.

Individuals may submit multiple entries, but no more than three.

Entrants must ensure that unless taken in a public space, photographs containing people’s faces have been taken with the permission of the person(s) in the photograph.

Notification of receipt of entry will normally be by email.

No feedback will be provided to unsuccessful entrants.

Each entry should be accompanied by a short explanation (between 50 and 200 words) as to how the photograph reflects the competition’s theme, ‘What Mayo Means to Me’.

The Mayo News and the judges do not accept liability for loss or damage of works. The Mayo News is not responsible for returning entries to entrants. Those who wish to pick up their hard-copy (postal) entries after the competition can do so by calling to The Mayo News office during its opening hours, any time between May 13 and May 31.

Online entries
To apply, email CreativityAwards@mayonews.ie, with the email subject line ‘Neill O’Neill Creative Competition – photography’.
As well as the short explanation referred to above, the body of the email should also include, the entrant’s full name, email address, postal address, phone number and (where appropriate) school class or year.
Photographs should be attached separately to the email.
Upload images with the original pixel size (unless cropped). Do not scale and do not change the resolution.
The image must be uploaded in JPEG (.jpg) or TIFF (.tif).
The images should not contain any watermarks or writing of any kind.
The Mayo News and the judges do not accept liability for loss of, or damage to work.

Postal entries
Photography entries must be delivered to The Mayo News office, The Fairgreen, Westport, Co Mayo, no later than 5pm, Friday, March 29. The opening hours: Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm. (Closed for lunch from 1pm to 2pm.)
The work must be accompanied by a cover letter that should include the short explanation referred to above, as well as the entrant’s full name, the title of the work, the medium used, and the entrant’s email address, postal address, phone number and (where appropriate) school and class or year.
The Mayo News and the judges do not accept liability for loss of, or damage to work. The Mayo News is not responsible for returning postal entries to entrants. Those who wish to pick up their entry after the competition can do so by calling to The Mayo News office during its opening hours, any time between May 13 and May 31.

LANGUAGE
All cover letters must be submitted in the English language.

CHANGES
Amendments cannot be made to entries after they have been submitted, nor substitutions made.

PUBLICATION
By submitting a photograph for consideration, the entrant gives The Mayo News the unrestricted right to exhibit / publish the photograph.

PRIZES
Winner, Primary School category: €200 and trophy for the photographer; publication of the artwork in The Mayo News and on mayonews.ie; profile of school in The Mayo News and on mayonews.ie.
​Winner, Secondary School category: €300 and trophy for the photographer; publication of the artwork in The Mayo News and on mayonews.ie; profile of school in The Mayo News and on mayonews.ie.
​Winner, Adult (over 18s) category: €500 and trophy for the photographer; publication of the artwork in The Mayo News and on mayonews.ie; 12-month subscription to The Mayo News digital edition.

AWARDS CEREMONY & EXHIBITION
The winning entrants will be presented with their awards at a special awards ceremony, to be held shortly after the winners are announced. Their work, and a judge-led selection of other entries, will also form part of an exhibition to be run after the winners have been announced.
