Mayo players pick up a few knocks

O’Mahony waits on injury niggles

Mike Finnerty

WITH less than three weeks to go until Mayo open the defence of their Connacht senior championship title against Sligo, a number of aches and strains will be concerning John O’Mahony again this week.
Both Ballinrobe’s Donal Vaughan and Charlestown’s Tom Parsons sat out their club’s league matches on Sunday afternoon after picking up groin injuries against Cavan in Saturday evening’s challenge match in Belmullet.
Shrule/Glencorrib’s Trevor Mortimer and Castlebar Mitchels’ Alan Feeney were both notable absentees in the Mayo dugout on Saturday evening and also sat out their club’s respective league matches on Sunday.
Mortimer’s absence from both games is believed to have been as a precaution as he was suffering from a ‘leg injury’ while Feeney is currently recovering from an ankle problem.
Meanwhile, Knockmore’s Aidan Kilcoyne left the field during the second half of his side’s victory over Charlestown after picking up a nasty cut on his knee while Alan Dillon was substituted during the course of Ballintubber’s league game with a hamstring problem.
Elsewhere, Aghamore’s Alan Freeman, whose club had a bye in the senior league on Sunday, was substituted again shortly after being introduced against Cavan after picking up a knock.
On the plus side, Keith Higgins came through Ballyhaunis’ league match against Ardnaree on Sunday just twenty-fours after lining out with the Mayo hurlers.
The Mayo football squad will be kept busy again next weekend with a challenge match against Dublin on Friday, club games on Saturday, and a county get-together on Sunday.
