Name: Steven Conroy
Nickname: None that I know of...
What’s your idea of perfect happiness?
It doesn’t exist. The key is finding something worth struggling for. Happiness comes from solving problems and moving on to new ones. Or maybe I’m just struggling and don’t know what I’m at.
Which living person do you most admire?
Probably Tom Brady. It’s a bit clichéd, but his journey from the start of college to now is the stuff of myth.
What’s your greatest extravagance?
I did spend a lot of money on two rings lately... and both of them were for myself. I’m not sure what that says about me. Lord knows I hear enough about it: the rings and what it says about me.
What’s your favourite journey?
From corner-forward to centre-back. The best thing is the journey is not over yet, maybe the lads in the full-back line need to beware or worse, the ‘keeper.
What or who is the love of your life?
I love the craic in the dressing room. Whether it’s with The Neale or Ballinrobe RFC. No matter who you are, no-one is safe from a jibe. The closer to the bone the better.
When and where were you happiest?
When I’m doing the jibing or taking the ‘tote’ on whether Pat Hopkins will return from retirement. Let’s just say, I’m a rich man. I’m wise to his tactic of avoiding pre-season training. The prodigal son was never in it.
Which talent would you most like to have?
The ability to tan well and then maintain it naturally like Tommy Conroy and Sully (Aidan O’Sullivan). Although maybe I am naive, there has been talk of sun beds...
What’s your greatest achievement?
There has been a few I’m proud of in sport and academics. But I truly believe the greatest achievements are ahead with The Neale, Ballinrobe RFC, and personally.
What’s your most treasured possession?
I’m not one for possessions too much, but I’ll go for the chip on my shoulder.
What’s your favourite pass time?
When I can, I’m a keen golfer. Hours of trying to get a two inch ball into a four inch hole from hundreds of yards away while driving yourself mental in the process – what could be better. Jesus, all imperial measurements in this answer... I’ll be shot.
What’s the quality you most like in a person?
Loyalty and/or honesty. Sometimes they can be hard to take in the short term, but in the long term they are invaluable traits.
Who are your favourite footballers?
When I was young it was Peter Canavan. Then it was Paul Galvin on to Paul Flynn. Currently maybe Paul Geaney. And I have no affection for the name Paul, I swear.
What’s your motto?
The world is your stage, confidence is everything.
