January date for Mayo News Club Stars Awards

Mike Finnerty

THINGS have changed very quickly here at The Mayo News in the space of just a few short weeks with the sudden and untimely passing of our Managing Editor, Neill O’Neill.
One of his favourite nights in recent years was our Club Stars awards at Knockranny House, Westport in early December. That was the night when The Mayo News got to put our best foot forward, showcase our second-to-none GAA coverage, and celebrate all that is great about the GAA communities and their heroes here in Mayo.
It really has become one of the biggest nights in the sporting social diary in the county every year, and has raised tens of thousands of euros for local charities since 2005.
This year, as a mark of respect to Neill, his partner Emma, and the O’Neill family, we at The Mayo News have taken the decision to postpone the Club Stars awards ceremony until Friday, January 19, 2018.
We feel that this is only right and proper, and our intention is to put our hearts and our souls into making the 2017 awards a night to remember as we celebrate the achievements of county champions like Castlebar Mitchels, Moy Davitts, Lahardane and Tooreen.
Not to mention the volunteers, young players, and past masters who contribute so much to the GAA in Mayo every year.
Along with our friends and sponsors at O’Neills and AIB, we have no doubt that January’s Club Stars will be a fitting tribute to the memory of our absent friend.
Neill was always a great supporter of the Club Stars awards, and had a great appreciation of what it meant to local clubs and communities to have their men and women honoured.
So put the date in your diary, spread the word, and tell your friends.
And, of course, watch this space!
