THE Mayo News boxing correspondent, Austin Garvin, was among the winners at the annual Mayo Boxing Awards which were held in Hotel Ballina last Saturday evening.
Austin, who is well-known across the region for his insightful analysis and expert opinion, was presented with a Special Recognition award to mark the contribution of both himself, and The Mayo News, to boxing coverage in the county.
The glittering awards ceremony was attended by 350 guests from all over the boxing community within Mayo.
“I love covering boxing but I was very surprised to receive this award,” Austin said last night. “It’s a labour of love for me and I’m delighted to have received the award on behalf of The Mayo News. I’ve been covering boxing for a long time now so I’m thrilled that our coverage has been recognised.”
The Special Recognition award was presented by Joe Hennigan, who is the Vice-President of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association and President of the Connacht Council.
“Joe has been very co-operative and deserves credit for all the hard work he has done for boxing,” remarked Austin.
Commenting on the award, Mike Finnerty, Sports Editor of The Mayo News said: “We’re absolutely delighted that Austin’s hard work, dedication and professionalism has been recognised by the boxing authorities in Mayo.
“Austin does a wonderful job, year in, year out, covering a sport that he, himself, excelled in for many years and very few people are better qualified to report on tournaments and boxers all over the region.
“We’ve always had a great relationship with the boxing fraternity and I’m sure this will only strengthen the ties between The Mayo News and clubs, officials and boxers all across the county.”
