Trevor Mortimer set to return to Mayo training

Trevor Mortimer is expected to train with Mayo tonight (Tuesday) for the first time since last June after accepting James Horan’s invitation to return to the county set-up.
The Mayo manager was in Shrule last Saturday evening to watch Mortimer in action for his club against Ballintubber in the Mayo senior league.
However, The Mayo News understands that the former Mayo skipper was invited to return to the county fold on Sunday week last, following Shrule/Glencorrib’s Division 1A league victory over Charlestown.
The 30 years-old was unable to link up with his old Mayo colleagues last week, but is expected to return to training at McHale Park, Castlebar tonight. He will then have approximately three weeks to nail down a place in James Horan’s championship squad.
Mortimer’s Shrule/Glencorrib team-mate, Dermot Geraghty, has also been invited to train with the Mayo panel after impressing Horan with his man-marking job on Cillian O’Connor last Saturday evening.
Geraghty (27) started both the 2004 and 2006 All-Ireland finals against Kerry at right-corner back but hasn’t played for Mayo since an FBD Connacht League game three years ago.
The duo will join the likes of Breaffy’s David Gavin and Ballycastle’s Michael Forde as players who are in contention for one of the remaining places in Mayo’s squad for the upcoming trip to London.
Meanwhile, James Horan has admitted that he was expecting a much tougher test from Antrim in last Sunday’s challenge match in Kiltimagh. Jason Doherty scored two goals in the first three minutes as Mayo ran out twelve point winners.
“The value of the game was questionable really,” the Mayo boss told The Mayo News. “It was over early in the first half to be honest.
“What I did see is that the way we’re trying to set up, the way we’re trying to play, is beginning to fall into place. We had a good shape, we let the ball in early, and we did a lot of things right.”
