Quay Road, Newport
Mickie Callaghan, Quay Road, Newport. THE sudden death took place on Saturday, August, 30 of Mickey Callaghan of Quay Road, one of Newport’s much loved and respected citizens. Reposing at St Dominick’s Funeral Home on Monday evening, his remains were received into St Patrick’s Parish Church by Fr Declan Carroll later that evening. Mass for the repose of Mickie’s soul was celebrated on Tuesday morning at 11am by Fr Carroll, during which hymns were sung by members of the Newport Church Choir.
Following the celebration of Mass, the funeral proceeded to Burrishoole Cemetery, where Mickie was laid to rest.
Son of the late Joseph and Catherine Callaghan, Mickie was, like his father before him, a carpenter by trade. Having served his time with Jack Quinn, Newport, Mickie worked for many years with Cox’s Westport and then Chadwick’s of Castlebar up until his retirement, and where he was held in very high esteem by both his work colleagues and his boss. He was an avid supporter of Burrishoole Football, never missing a game and one of his other great loves was a game of cards with his friends. He was a quiet man, a gentleman and a good and generous neighbour, small in stature but with a big heart, as those close to him knew so well.
Mickie was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, Edward (Junior) and PJ; and his sister, Frankie (Ann Francis). He is survived by, and will be sadly missed, by his nephew Eamonn Callaghan and his wife Regina, his sister-in-law Rose, cousins, many relatives, neighbours and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.
