Joe Holland sadly passed away on July 5, 2018 in Mayo University Hospital following a short illness. Joe was born in 1938 to Catherine and Patrick Holland, Clerhaun, Westport, the eldest of two children. The family lived at No. 2 McNeela Terrace and Joe attended the Quay school. After school he worked loading and unloading coal and timber from the boats at Westport Quay. Joe also helped out on the family farm with his father Patrick delivering goods by horse and cart to town hence developing his love of animals, mainly horses. After the death of his father Patrick, Joe emigrated along with his mother and brother to America where he lived for over thirty years, here he became very interested in American football, Ice hockey and Country music, later to be replaced by Irish Rugby and Soccer. When Joe’s brother Ray passed away at a young age, Joe’s mother returned to Ireland and lived in Carnalurgan and when she got into poor health Joe returned to care for her until her death. He decided to stay on as he had rekindled his love of horses. He became well known at the horse fairs and sales the length and breath of Ireland. His cheerful disposition and good advice on horses drew him into a circle of like minded people. Joe was a very kind, genuine, decent man who lived a quite and unassuming life. He will be very sadly missed by his wide circle of good friends and neighbours. Joe was predeceased by his mother Catherine and his father Patrick and his brother Raymond. Reposing was at Navin’s Funeral Home with removal to St. Mary’s Church, burial was in Glospatrick Cemetry. May his kind and gentle soul Rest in Peace.
