Fr John Corry


South Dakota and Kiltimagh

The death occurred on July 11, of Fr John Corry, Philip, South Dakota and formerly of Garryroe, Kiltimagh and Thomas Street.
Fr John, who was affectionately known as ‘Fr Jack’, was born on September 10, 1926 and was son of the late Michael (ex Garda Siochána) and Catherine Corry ‘Mount Carmel’, Garryroe, Kiltimagh. He was ordained on Saturday, May 31, 1952 by the Most Rev William J McCarthy, Bishop of Rapid City and celebrated his First Solemn Mass on Sunday June 8, 1952 in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 59th Street, Brooklyn, New York.
He ministered in several parishes in South Dakota, namely Custer, Bison, Wall and Philip and spent the last 13 years in the Philip Nursing Home, where he died on July 11, aged 91. His funeral Mass took place in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Philip SD with burial in Wall Cemetery, South Dakota.
Fr Corry loved Ireland and he still regarded it as home right to the very end. He loved his many visits home to Ireland, and especially to his native Kiltimagh, over the years and he really enjoyed visiting with family and friends in Clare, Galway, Mayo and of course Kiltimagh. He regularly celebrated Mass during these visits, not only in the Church of the Holy Family, Kiltimagh, but also in the family home in Garryroe and also in the homes of his many friends in Garryroe and Thomas Street.
Fr John was predeceased by his father and mother, Michael and Catherine, his brother Michael, sister Mary and sister- in-law Mary. He is survived by his brother Dan, (Chesterfield, England), sister-in-law Noreen, nephews, nieces, grand-nephews, grand-neices, cousins, relatives and many friends. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated in the Church of the Holy Family, Kiltimagh on the occasion of his Month’s Mind on Saturday, August 11, at 11am. Ar Dheis Dé go raibh a anam dilís.
