Michael Hastings

Shanvalleybeg, Drummin, Westport

Michael Hastings, better known as Mikey Nolan, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 24 at Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar. He was son of Tim and Winifred Hastings and was born on October 27, 1927.
He attended Cuilmore National School and worked on the family farm until age 19 years, when he emigrated to England. He worked for various firms in the North of England until 1967 when he returned to Shanvalleybeg to care for his father and take over the farm. He was a keen farmer, he loved his animals and especially his dog ‘Captain’. Michael also worked for Mayo County Council for many years and was well known as a roller driver. He had other interests too like going to vintage shows, patterns and sheep shows. He enjoyed reading and kept up to date with current affairs and politics. He was a great conversationalist and enjoyed visits from family, neighbours and friends. Michael was a very positive person with a relaxed demeanor, he never seemed to worry about anything, as he used to say ‘What’s the use?’.
He will be fondly remembered as a gentleman in every sense of the word. He will be sadly missed by his sister Margaret Madden (Limerick); nieces, nephews, neighbours and friends. Michael was predeceased by his brother Ted, and his sisters Ann Ronan (Bekan) and Mary Gavin (Tonlegee).
May he rest in peace.
