In January 1997 Mary suffered a devastating blow with the sudden death of her husband Frank. With her family reared Mary took up employment in the local national school where she was a popular figure for over 35 years. She worked up until the time of her illness. In July 2015 Mary was diagnosed with cancer which she fought to the end. Mary was a teaching assistant and senior midday supervisor at Larmenier and Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School in Hammersmith and worked for over 35 years. She was also involved in REIA in the local church.
