Mary T Costello

Obituaries

Gorlough, Taugheen

THE death took place last week in the Claremount Nursing Home, Claremorris, of Mary T Costello (nee Navin), Gorlough, Taugheen. She was 94 and had been in declining health for some time.
Mary T was formerly Navin from Crossboyne and was the eldest of a family of seven. Only her sister Rita, who resides in Boston, survived her from that generation of the Navan family. She was predeceased by her sister Kathleen Heneghan (Esker, Ballindine) who died at the age of 34, and by her brothers Jack, Christy and Vincent and Tom.
Mary T married Pake Costello from Belmont and they raised a family of two sons and a daughter.
The family were widely known throughout the area and their son JJ was Mayo senior goalie for a few seasons during the 1970s. Both JJ and Padraig (Ballinrobe) have been synonymous with the club and county GAA scene in Mayo down through the years. Phil and her husband Christy (Heneghan) have been huge supporters of the athletics scene in the county.
Mary T was a lovely, pleasant, and kind lady with a strong devotion to her faith all her life. She was a grand neighbour and good friend and was highly thought of by all who knew her in the locality.
A wake was held in the family home and the neighbours excelled in the way in which they all rallied around in the best traditions of the rural West.
Reposing was at Gilligan’s Funeral Home, Claremorris with removal to St Michael’s Church, Taugheen. Following Requiem Mass on Thursday celebrated by Fr James Quinn, and assisted by Fr Michael Gormally, burial took place in Taugheen New Cemetery. Large crowds were present on both days to pay their respects and show their support for the Costello family.
At the end of the Mass, her son JJ gave a tremendous eulogy of the highest calibre. There were many smiles along the way as he recalled stories and memories from over the years.
He paid tribute to the neighbours for their goodness and he had special words for Fr James Quinn whom he thanked so graciously for his kindness, concern and ministry to his mother over the years.
Mary T, who was predeceased by her husband Pake, is sadly missed by her daughter Phil (Heneghan), sons JJ and Padraic, daughter-in -law Delia, son-in-law Christy, and her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sister Rita (Breton) USA, brother-in-law, sister- in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.
