Mayo, Longford and Manchester
PEGGY Carney, Murneen, Claremorris, and Elm Gardens, Balla, who died recently following an illness, was formerly Jordan from Ballinalee, Co Longford. Her husband Austin died on December 25, 2005.
Peggy met Austin when they both lived and worked in Manchester. Several members of the Jordan family from Longford also made their homes in Manchester and Leeds.
They were married in Manchester and later moved back to Austin’s home village of Murneen in 1980 where they raised their family of three, sons Austin and Andrew and daughter Angela.
Peggy worked for some years with the Conraty Company in Claremorris where she made many friends.
A lady of gentle disposition, Peggy was very well liked by all her neighbours and friends in the general Barnacarroll area. She was always courteous and gracious and had a kind welcome for all she met along life’s journey.
She moved to Balla almost ten years ago and soon adapted to her new life and friends in Elm Gardens. She quickly got to make herself at home in Balla and spent a pleasant decade among this grand community.
Peggy was an ardent reader of newspapers and also loved to keep in touch with her favourite shows on both radio and television.
Though 35 years away for Manchester, she still retained a great fondness for the city and its people and kept in regular contact through her family members in Manchester and Leeds. She also cherished her home county and a Longford GAA jersey was placed in the coffin during the reposing ceremony in Balla.
Removal took place from Balla Funeral Home to Barnacarroll Church with interment in the local cemetery following Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr Peter Gannon, PP.
Her nephew, Anthony McBrien, the popular country singer from Fermanagh, rendered a lovely version of his own composition, Mother’s Song, which he composed as a tribute to his mother Bridie, and dedicated it to his dear aunt, Peggy, during the Funeral Mass.
Peggy, who was predeceased by her husband Austin and also by her sisters Bridie and Mary and brothers Tommy and Dermot, is survived by her sons Austin and Andrew, daughter Angela, in-laws, grandchildren, her sister Lucy (Manchester), brothers Michael (Australia) and Andy, Vincent, Tony, Liam and Eamon (all in England), relatives, neighbours and friends.
