Obituaries

Murneen, Claremorris

TOM Gill, Murneen, Claremorris, who died recently, was a popular and highly regarded member of the local farming community. News of his sudden death caused widespread shock and sadness in the district.
Tom, who was in his mid-70s, was one of a family of nine, three sons and six daughters, born to Michael and Annie Gill. He had a great love and fondness for the land from his early years and it remained very much at the heart of his life. Tom loved the great outdoors and the gentle ebb and flow of the seasons. He was a man very much in tune with nature and had an abiding respect for the natural environment.
Sharing time with members of the farming fraternity at the marts in Claremorris and Balla was something he cherished in a special way. He had an abiding interest in all matters relating to land, livestock and farming and he was a man who worked hard over the years.
The simple things in life held the most appeal for Tom. He was a country man through and through and had a fine understanding of the rural way of life. He enjoyed sport, especially watching GAA and soccer on television and, like so many people from this county, followed the Mayo teams on an annual basis.
He was a man with deep roots in his home area and he and his wife Kathleen enjoyed the friendship of so many people in the region. Kathleen (nee Walsh) from Bohola spent many years working with Mayo Library and is widely known for her knowledge of the Library service and her kindness in dealing with people.
Tom was a pleasant and unassuming gentleman and he will be sadly missed by his many friends around the district. The community extends deepest sympathy to Kathleen and the extended family circle on their sad bereavement.
Removal took place from O’Hora’s Funeral Home in Kiltimagh to Barnacarroll Church with burial in the adjoining cemetery following Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr Peter Gannon, PP, Fr Tommy Commins and Fr Paddy Kilcoyne, PP, Kiltimagh.
Tom, who was predeceased by his brothers Seán (Greyfield, Kiltimagh) and Miko (London) and sister Philomena (Dublin), is survived by his wife Kathleen, sisters May (Galway), Emer (Carraroe), Frances (Galway), Carmel (Kent) and Fionnuala (Moate), nephews, nieces, in-laws, relatives, neighbours and friends. May his gentle soul have peaceful rest.
