Nora Costello

Obituaries

Shessiagh, Taugheen

THE death took place in Castlebar General Hospital of Nora Costello, Shessiagh, Taugheen. She was in her mid-80s and was formerly Ansbro from Hollybrook. She was predeceased by her husband Mike in 1984.
Nora and Mike were farming people who had a great knowledge of the land and livestock. They raised a family of seven, four daughters and three sons and imbued in them a sense of place and the values they held dear themselves.
Nora came from a generation of people whose lives revolved around the changing seasons. From helping out on the farm such as saving the hay, helping with the turf to milking the cows, she knew all about the many ways of life on the land that helped to rear so many rural families.
She was also a great house-keeper and took a gentle pride in ensuring that everything was spick and span around the home and the farmyard. Nora had a hearty welcome for all who called and she had the gift of making all feel so much at home.  She had a great devotion to her deep Christian faith throughout her long life and was a regular at church ceremonies all through the years.
Nora was highly thought of by the people of the district. She was truly one of the grand old stock of the region and she will be sadly missed by her devoted family and all in the neighbourhood.
Removal took place from Gilligan’s Funeral Home to St Michael’s Church, Taugheen, with burial in Crossboyne Church following Requiem Mass celebrated by Fr James Quinn. She is survived by her sons Seamus, Frank and Johnny, daughters Nora, Evelyn Alice and Brenda, sons-in-law, daughter-in-law, her grandchildren, relatives, neighbours and friends.
• Adding further to the poignancy of the occasion was the death of her grandson Peter Burke in Ballybane, Galway the day after Nora’s death. Peter’s funeral took place to Bohermore Cemetery in Galway.
