Kitty Geraghty

Obituaries

Plougastel Court, Westport

As already briefly reported in The Mayo News, the death has taken place of Ms Kitty Geraghty, Plougastel Court, Westport and formerly of High Street, Westport. Aged 80 years, she passed away at Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar, on February 20 in the presence of her sister-in-law Mary, her nieces and nephews. She was one of Westport’s best-known and most-respected figures.
Kitty was born in Drumindoo, Westport, on June 6, 1933, later moving to High Street and some time later to Plougastel Court where her home was her pride and joy.
She was daughter of the late Martin and Elsie Geraghty and was predeceased by her five brothers, Joe, Walter, Austin, Broddie and Paddy.
Kitty worked in the Grand Central Hotel in Westport (now the Wyatt) for many years. She enjoyed her time there and, as many people remarked at her funeral ‘it was her hotel kitchen and nobody crossed the line!
She was a great bingo fan and also loved the TV ‘soaps’, especially Fair City and Eastenders. She had her own views on the various characters and looked forward to each episode.
In recent years she attended the Day Care Centre at the MacBride Community Nursing Unit. Sadly when day care ceased she missed it terribly. In the latter weeks of her life she was in full-time care at the MacBride CNU. She was very happy there and all staff were exceptionally kind to her.
Kitty will also be remembered as an avid Mayo GAA fan and the Mayo flag regularly flew outside her home. In her younger days she was a noted camogie player and a formidable opponent on the playing field.
She will be sadly  missed by her sister Mary Cox (L.A.), several nieces and nephews, sister-in-law Mary Geraghty (Castlebar), other relatives and many friends.
Removal was from McGing’s Funeral Home to St Mary’s Church, Westport, where Fr Karl Burns and Fr Micheál MacGréil officiated. Fr Karl Burns was the celebrant of her funeral Mass in which several family members participated.
She was laid to rest in Aughavale Cemetery. May her gentle soul rest in peace.
