Judge fled in fear of defendant

Judge Mary Devins told a sitting of Castlebar District Court last week how a defendant had put her in ‘some fear’ after he ‘ran across the road, roaring’ at her as she walked from The Mall in Castlebar back into Castlebar Courthouse after lunch. Judge Devins added that she had been forced to flee into the relative safety of the courthouse as a consequence.
Danny Ring of 13, Cloonmonad Close, Westport had been due to appear before Castlebar District Court that morning but failed to appear and a bench warrant was issued.
He appeared in court that afternoon, after the incident outside the courthouse, and apologised for his actions.
“I thought I could walk around Castlebar safely. This never happened to me before. He ran across the road, roaring at me and I had to rush into the court (building),” Judge Devins explained.
Addressing Judge Devins directly, Danny Ring said: ‘sorry about coming across the road to you, I was trying to explain my case to you’.
Judge Devins indicated that she wished to remove herself from hearing the case after the incident.
