While banks and other services seem to be cutting their costs by pulling out of small towns, the Credit Union has resisted the trend with a new office to open in Newport.
The Credit Union branch which will be located in newly renovated premises on Main Street and the final preparations are being put in place with local volunteers being trained to assist in the running of the office. The new office has been fitted to a very high standard and will be open from 10.30am to 2.30pm for two days per week - with business hours extended as demand requires.
The opening of this new office in Newport is a direct result of intensive work and negotiations by the directors of Westport Credit Union and Newport Area District Development Company (NADDC) who feel it represents an important step in the provision of a vital service in the Newport area. They have encouraged everybody in the community to show strong support to ensure the viability of the office into the future.
Newport has been lacking in financial services with only the mobile bank and the Post office serving the needs of the community. The new office will fill this void in the town and surrounding areas.
The office will open to the public for business from Friday, May 7 and special events to mark the opening will take place on the day.
